Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

Chatham’s current ADU bylaw is outdated and no longer aligned with recent state law changes. We now have an opportunity to update it in a way that actually works for our community.

ADUs can be part of the solution—but only if we set the right rules.

State law allows short-term, month-to-month rentals. I do not support that approach for Chatham. If we’re going to allow more ADUs, they should contribute to our year-round community—not become short-term or seasonal overflow.

That’s why I support limiting ADU rentals to year-round occupancy.

ADUs can help in specific, meaningful ways—providing space for aging parents, adult children, or local workers. But we should be honest: they are not a silver bullet for our housing challenges.

This is about balance—allowing flexibility for homeowners while making sure these units support the long-term needs of Chatham.
